Gert Vermeulen is full professor of (European and international) criminal law and director of the Institute for International Research on Criminal Policy (IRCP) ( He is also extraordinary professor of international evidence law at Maastricht University, and Privacy Commissioner at the Belgian Privacy Commission, member of the Europol JSB, the SIS II SCG and the EU Article 29 subgroup on Borders, Travel and Law Enforcement. He is general director publications and executive committee member of the International Association of Penal Law. His scholarly and research expertise is mainly in the areas of European and international criminal law and policy, organised crime, terrorism, trafficking in human beings, migrant smuggling, fundamental rights and data protection. He has published widely in these and other areas and has acted as a (research) consultant or ad hoc expert for the European Commission, various EU Presidencies, the Council of Europe, the OSCE and the UN.
