Professor Frederik Dhaenens gives a lecture on 100 years of LGBTQ Cinema
(09-11-2022)
On 10 November, Professor Dhaenens will take you through the history of LGBTQ cinema on the occasion of Prisma 2022: Queer Arts festvial. Short excerpts from six classics and lesser-known films show the changing ways in which sexual diversity is depicted: from pioneering film Anders als die Andern (Richard Oswald, 1919) to Hollywood melodrama The Children's Hour (William Wyler, 1961), to New Queer Cinema from Happy Together (Wong Kar-wai, 1997) to the female gaze in Portrait de la jeune fille en feu (Céline Sciamma, 2019). This creates a layered historical picture with attention to the ambiguity of stereotyping, the importance of historical context, and the social role of LGBTQ voices in film.
